Proud Like a Mountain CD recovered from geocache in the Yukon!

A family was delighted to hike up above Fish Lake, near Whitehorse, and discover Peter Puffin's signed CD! Peter hiked up and placed the CD personally during his Yukon Concert Tour in the Autumn of 2008! Why not combine GPS technology with going back to nature this summer?

The family emailed Peter to say THANKS... "My son who is in grade 1 loved it! We listened to the CD on our drive back from Fish Lake to Whitehorse... he was very excited!"

The secret is out... How many other geocaches has Peter Puffin visited and left CD's at? Clue: Peter was recently spotted in Canmore...

Peter says: "Taking kids into our awesomely beautiful outdoors is so worthwhile... One of the best gifts we can give our children (and ourselves!)... Along with music of course! Wish I could see the look on a youngster's face when they find songs in the wilderness!

And I hope more parents will accompany their kids for exciting adventures in the wilderness this summer... Immersion in nature is one of best medicines for rejuvenating the spirit, and planting the seeds for kids to be great environmental stewards. Google geocaching.com for an exciting way to GO WILD this summer!

You could always order a CD to take with you for the drive out too!" (We can mail same day!)

Peter Puffin Fundraising Concert Helps Calgary Kids Have Safe Playground!

West Hillhurst families will soon have a brand new playground where kids and grown-ups: can exercise, play creatively, and meet new friends! Anything that helps us go outside for fresh air and exercise, seems like a great idea... in a world of computer games and TV screens!

Peter's concert was the central attraction at the Sunday afternoon gathering of friends and neighbours, local businesses and community members, who all came together to bid on silent auction items, make donations and build relationships, all around the cause of providing a safe place for youngsters to play!

Peter's concert included songs like: The Bike Helmet Blues (about sports equipment safety), Talk About Peace (about peace-building with each other), and the ever-popular Proud Like a Mountain (about celebrating how we can persevere over hurdles, and generally help each live thriving lifestyles)!

Thanks to everyone who bought Peter's most recent CD. Peter donated a portion of CD proceeds, and along with ticket sales, almost $1800 was added to the other fundraising activities. Thanks to organizers Jo Larson and all who volunteered and contributed to such a successful event. Peter is honoured to have partnered with the West Hillhurst Playground Society to contribute to the quality and safety of families getting outside to play in his good 'ol former neighbourhood!

Peter was signing CD's with the name of the playground and raising smiles by telling kids... "Everytime you hear one of these songs or see the new playground, you will be able to say you helped build that place!" Such worthwhile events remind us of the precious nature of friends and building relationships, the role of the universal language of music in bringing us together, playing safely, and just getting ourselves outside!

Thanks to the whole Jasper Elementary School and community for coming together for such a worthwhile cause!

Celebrating “Oh Canada” ‘live’!

Peter’s last concert leg of a phenomenal 2009 touring year is winding it’s way through Peace River Country in NW Alberta. Though Peter is playing some bigger, soft seater halls these days... every day on-the-road brings a new heartwarming story of the truly wonderful things that happen in elementary schools. At EE Oliver School in Fairview, one moment, almost 400 students would be pin-drop silent during one of Peter’s stories... and then be up on their feet singing at the top of their lungs during ‘ Proud Like a Mountain’ the next minute! Thanks to all the teachers & parents for all they do to deliver such respectful audiences to the concert hall!

Peter was heard to say... “How heartwarming to hear the whole school community singing their school song “Home of the Eagles”... with music specialist/teacher O.J. Shmyruk softly strumming her guitar and leading such angelic voices, singing lyrics she had penned... as I checked my own guitars before starting the show... Truly an honour to share the stage with a passionate educator in a school that still has a music specialist weaving the universal language across the curriculum...”

“I loved hearing about how the regular pre-recorded musical accompaniment to the daily singing of ‘ Oh Canada’ had run into technical challenges... And OJ quickly rallied three students to lead the song ‘live’ from the office intercom that first day... And now at EE Oliver School, a different set of three students accompanies the music teacher OJ playing guitar over the office mic... Every day! I can just picture them pouring their hearts into singing our National Anthem, while around the school... Everyone stops what they are doing to sing along! Now that is a patriotic school! Celebrating our peacetime freedom in the “true north strong and free” (of Alberta!). Teachers really do deserve to be recognized for the energy they invest in planting the seeds of caring and sharing... In so many ways... And in what it means to be Canadian!”

Peter Puffin helps Edmontonians celebrate “Earth Day Recycled”!

On Saturday, September 18, 2009, on Edmonton’s Fringe Festival site, Peter felt fortunate to perform on the main stage and help an enthusiastic audience of kids and grown-ups sing along with green songs about the everyday actions that each one of us can take... to make a BIG difference in how we respect this remarkable planet we are guests on...  Ride a bike, tap off when we brush teeth, drive slower, fly as direct as possible, support green energy, fix things rather than buying brand new... Everyone has great ideas about how to live in harmony with the earth that still supports us!

Peter was heard to say:  “I recall a moment when suddenly the whole park & square “whooshed in” and shrank into the size of a warm living room around me, with the kids (and grown-ups!) all singing along and doing the actions to “Proud Like a Mountain”... I’ve had that happen as an audience member but not very often as the performer in such a large, open space.  A “keeper” memory for sure! Thanks to all the fellow performers, volunteers/organizers, exhibitors and participants who came out to an Earth Day Festival in September!  Reminding us that every day should be Earth Day!”

Everyone at the event was so great to work with!  Both “in the wings” and on-stage!  Sound guys were stellar.  Dale Ladouceur’s set had a great groove... Particularly enjoyed hearing that ‘ol Bruce Cockburn chestnut from his 2nd or 3rd album.  And then she came up on stage with her daughter to do the singalong actions during our rendition of “Peace Like a River”... What an honour for us!  Thanks Dale!

Bob Jahrig was very gracious to work with too.  And his songs set a tapestry-like, steeped ambiance all around the park!  I’ll be watching to catch him ‘live’ again!

And John Spearn was a joy to share the stage with... Such an honour to meet everyone.  Hope our paths cross again soon!

Gracious appreciation to the parents, staff and students for supporting such positive PR for a unique and sensational “Little School That Could, Can and Will!”  Special thanks to the Calgary Board of Education (CBE), for recognizing and profiling this epitome of what a community school can be!  Peter is a former Calgary Board Curriculum Specialist who took a one year break in 1996... to pursue his ideas about tapping music to teach all subjects full-time.  Peter is thoroughly grateful for how his CBE experiences were so formative and influential on his current “traveling educator/guitar slinger” opportunities!

Yukon tour a great success!

Peter’s Autumn 2008 tour leg up to the Yukon Territory, Canada, featured packed workshops at the Yukon’s Teachers Association Conference in Whitehorse,  a SOLD-out double bill family concert with environmental singer/songwriter Remy Rodden at the Old Firehall downtown, and a tour of Yukon Schools in and around Whitehorse.  Stay tuned for pictures.

Read more in this FEATURE article in the Yukon News that previewed Peter’s visit to the Yukon:  http://songs-for-ee.blogspot.com/

Thanks to all the kind-hearted folks in the Yukon Territory who made us feel so welcome touring their gorgeous environment!

September 27, 2008...  From the concert trail in the Yukon...  Picture an old Fire Hall beside the Yukon River... Tall wooden beamed ceilings...  Warm stage lights splash on a small stage at one end of the room.  Early on a Saturday afternoon and happy children run around while smiling parents mingle.  Advance tickets for the hastily organized show sold out a few days earlier... And now families cluster around the door hoping for “no shows”.

Local environmental singer/songwriter Remy Rodden sings from the stage as kids of all ages smile and laugh together...  Brightly coloured balloons bob around the room and voices softly sing along.  Visiting musician Peter Lenton sings harmony via a wireless headset from somewhere in the room, while Remy sings of keeping our earth clean and recognizing the importance of maintaining bio-diversity.  Peter & Remy take turns singing songs to plant the seeds of caring for the planet...  Remy & Peter realized a mutual life-long dream of performing and touring together... And they also spent the following week delivering concerts in Whitehorse and beyond.  Watch our “Photo Album” for pictures!

Musical Keynote Inspires Young Authors Conference!

Peter was thrilled to present a very well received interactive, musical keynote address concert at the Young Authors Conference in High River, Alberta, May 3, 2008.  Thanks to all the volunteer staff and parent volunteers who organised such a stellar event.  One parent enthusiastically offered thanks for “starting the day with such fun and inspiring angles and hints on the writing process and sending the students off to their workshops on a real high note!”

Students also had the chance to meet Peter close-up in two activity-based student workshops afterwards.  Participants learned curriculum-tied, lyric gathering techniques, wrote their own songs and then recorded the results of their creative process with Peter’s portable recording studio!  Among the many positive comments from a number of grown-ups... “one of the best... If not the best... keynote we have ever had!"

Peter said he was honoured to share the conference presentation spaces with all the other incredible authors and illustrators.

Keep writing young authors... Write on!

Calgary Mayor’s Environmental Expo Concerts Filling Fast!

Peter is honoured to be returning for 3 interactive “World Wild CD Release” concerts at the Calgary Mayor’s Environmental Expo on June 3, 4, & 5.  History may soon repeat... Peter started selling out shows in the same John Dutton Theatre of the central Calgary Public Library back in the year 2000 as part of 4 sold-out performances at the library and the Engineered Air Theatre of the Performing Arts Centre, for the Calgary International Children’s Festival.

Many concert goers have commented on what a warm venue in Calgary’s downtown library theatre is for a high energy “Peter Puffin’s Whale Tales” concert.  A soft seater of 400 (365 for third day) offers an intimate experience with a multi-award winning singer/songwriter who actively encourages us to “go wild in animal costumes” and reduce our ecological footprint and impact on the earth.  These June shows will find Peter with a brand new CD available too!  See our bookings page for contact info.  Hope to see you there!

Puffin Sings From the Saskatechwan Forest!

Peter’s Concert Packs the Cypress Hills Amphitheatre in Southwest Saskatchewan, July 2007! "This surely must be one of the best views from a concert stage ever!" Peter exclaimed during the soundcheck for his triumphant return to the Saskatchewan side of Canada’s celebrated Inter-Provincial Park. "I have fond memories of a packed, steaming hot Rec Hall performance a couple of thousand shows ago in 1997 and I’ve been looking forward to returning ever since!

Early evening sunshine splashed through the branches and onto the straight, magnificent stands of Lodgepole Pine trunks, providing the perfect setting for a summer amphitheatre concert. Kids and parents and grown-ups streamed along the network of forest paths leading to the concert venue, long before show time.  "Looking out from the stage I could see hundreds of smiling faces surrounded by gorgeous Pine trees, boughs waiving ever so slightly in the evening breeze, while wisps of cloud sailed by in a powder blue sky above. What an appropriate place to sing together about saving habitat and looking after nature!

One of the park interpreters estimated over 500 people jammed into the seats, sitting at Peter’s feet and spilling out into the woods around the seating area. The kids and grown-ups sang wonderfully on their own, and together their voices could be heard all over the park. Peter helped the audience write "The Cypress Hills News" about protecting their unique area of wilderness... Where the rolling prairies meet the pines near the Alberta/Saskatchewan border.

Peter’s summer tour has traveled to Saskatoon’s Pike Lake Provincial Park, two concerts to celebrate Parks Day and the Parks Canada Centennial in spectacular Jasper, and three concerts to commemorate 60 years since the first Alberta Oil Well strike at Leduc #1 in 1947! See our photo album for pictures as they are posted. Wishing safe travels to all!

Storytelling Satchel

  • Collect your own satchel of objects/artifacts that illustrate a topic or subject you are studying.  These can be natural world items like shells and colourful stones or knick knack items from home.
  • Lay out a blanket or table cloth in the centre of a circle of students and introduce each object in a mime, requesting silence form the students.
  • Ask students to select an object for you to tell short story about.  You can tell the real story or a made-up one.  Later on students can vote whether the story is true or false. Emphasize the imaginative aspects of the exercise not just the content.
  • Students can eventually volunteer to choose an object and tell a story about it.
  • Kids love to bring their own objects in too, which can be stored in a box for regular use.
  • Write a short story about one of the objects and draw a picture.
  • Post the pictures on a bulletin board.  Or take the students on a "viewing party" of the stories and pictures on student desks.
