01. We ARE Social Beings! Teaching the NEW Social Studies (K-6) with the Multiple Intelligences (MI)

This hands-on, interactive session will offer dozens of ready-to-use activities that tap the various intelligences in our students to address many of the global learning objectives (glo's) of the new SS Program of Studies.

These classroom tested activities will encourage students to: 1) use storytelling to celebrate Canadian history; 2) be active, responsible (local & global) citizens; 3) practise critical thinking skills... eg. for realising both sides of a social issue and appropriate decision-making; 4) fostering respect and stewardship for natural resources: 5) encourage environmental literacy, boosting self esteem and community building; 6) celebrate the cultural diversity of Canadians; and 7) appreciate societal values as they apply to environmental, economic, and social well being.

Arts and science activities will be tapped via Gardner's Multiple Intelligences approaches to allow teachers to reach and engage more students even more efficiently. A complimentary, detailed hand-out and additional multi-media teaching resources will be available at reduced cost. An integrated approach to lesson planning will also show participants how multiple curriculum outcomes (eg. social studies, LA and Science) can be addressed with the same classroom activity.

So come and join multiple award-winning presenter Peter Lenton (aka former curriculum specialist and current guitar slinger Peter Puffin) for an interactive session where you will ACTUALLY DO the activities so YOU WILL KNOW how they fit upon returning to your 'live' classroom. Let's have some fun with implementing the new SS by remembering... WE ARE ALL SOCIAL BEINGS!
